Quantity Surveyor Salary Survey

QS Salary Benchmarks 2026: What Are Quantity Surveyors Earning Across the UK?

If you're a QS thinking about your next move — or a hiring manager trying to build a competitive offer — knowing where the market sits right now is everything. At Gold Group, we place Quantity Surveyors at every level across the UK, and our 2026 salary data is drawn directly from live briefs and recent placements. Here's what you need to know.

London still leads — but the gap is narrowing

Unsurprisingly, London and the South East command the highest salaries. A mid-level QS in the capital can expect £48–55k, while a Senior QS or Managing QS ranges from £55–85k — a band wide enough to reflect the significant difference between a first-time senior and an experienced commercial lead. Commercial Directors in this region regularly exceed £150k when you factor in car allowance, bonus and pension.

Outside London, salaries remain strong. The West Midlands is performing particularly well at senior and commercial levels, with Senior QSs/Managing QS’s commanding £57–80k and Commercial Managers up to £95k — figures that increasingly rival some parts of the South East once cost of living is factored in.

What the data shows at every level

Across all regions, the career progression from Graduate to Commercial Director represents a significant earnings journey — starting in the mid-to-high £20ks and reaching well into six figures at director level. The widest salary bands are consistently at the Senior QS/Managing QS level, which reflects how much experience, specialism and contract type can influence what an employer will pay.

Scotland and Yorkshire offer competitive packages relative to their cost of living, with Senior QSs in both regions earning up to £75–78k, and Commercial Directors reaching £118–122k.

Three things we're seeing in the market right now

First, the Senior QS shortage is real. Demand for candidates with NEC3/4 experience continues to outstrip supply, particularly in water, highways and energy. If you have that specialism and you're open to a conversation, the market is very much in your favour.

Second, the best QSs aren't on job boards. At Senior level and above, passive candidates dominate the talent pool. Direct, relationship-led recruitment is the only reliable way to reach them — which is why clients who rely solely on advertising consistently miss out on the top level candidates.

Third, counter-offers are becoming the norm. Around 40% of candidates we place receive a counter-offer when they hand in their notice. Salary alone rarely retains people long-term — project quality, progression and culture matter just as much.

 A note on the figures

All salary data represents base pay only. Car allowance (typically £5k–£8k at Senior QS level and above), bonus and pension sit on top of these figures.

Actual offers vary by company size, project complexity and location.
