Brief

The Chief Engineer reports to the Engineering & Technology International Director and is accountable for engineering performance on programmes across RMS UK. Develops and implements technology and product strategies in alignment with business strategies. Contributes to business growth strategy development and ensures engineering solutions and costs are proposed in alignment with win strategies.

Maintains knowledge of current and developing technologies and design and analysis methodologies in RADAR, Electronic Warfare, Cyber (Offensive/Defensive including Electromagnetic Warfare), Communications, Radio Frequency (RF) systems, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), simulation and other relevant areas. Develops models and architectural guidelines for current and future system development.

Frequent contact with equivalent level managers, industry peers, and senior customer representatives concerning projects, operational decisions, technical activities, schedules, engineering cost performance, contractual issues, and general overall performance of organizational unit(s). Conducts briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives. Collaborates on technology and product transfers and best practices with peer Chief Engineers internationally.

Accomplishes results through leadership of a chief engineering organisation.

  • Responsible for technical performance on programs in meeting or exceeding technical requirements while ensuring engineering cost and schedule commitments are met.
  • Ensures design concepts, criteria and engineering efforts for product research, development, integration and test are developed and implemented.
  • Ensures problems are identified and solutions are developed, through allocation of resources, process adherence, process improvement and appropriate team interaction.
  • Champions the advancement and implementation of Digital Transformation.
  • Responsible for ensuring the Technical Integrity of all Products within the product line and engineering performance on programs ;
    • Ensures that solid program fundamentals are being executed and followed on each program
    • Ensures a fully documented and traced requirements baseline is maintained
    • Ensures key Technical Performance Measures (TPM) are actively tracked
    • Ensures all requirements are adequately verified
  • Ensures the Chief Engineering organisation provides timely and accurate projections of Engineering resource requirements to engineering managers.
  • Responsible for research and development strategies, development and recommendations for application of technology to proposals and programmes to accomplish long term objectives.
  • Helps to shape the relevant technical input for business cases for US investment for BD's NBF requirements.
  • Develops the appropriate relationships across the US E&T and BD community to help pull through appropriate skills/tools etc for UK to be successful in achieving LRP.
  • Provides input into a OneRMS development environment roadmap that meets the strategic requirements of each business area to execute programs successfully.
  • Works alongside engineering functional leadership team to ensure training plans are in place to ensure technical excellence in UK RMS programmes.

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Chief Engineer will include:

  • Demonstratable experience leading large engineering teams/portfolios in the development and integration of complex aviation, naval or land programs. Particularly, experience in leading engineering development through the requirements definition, solution development, integration, ground and/or flight test, and delivery phases.
  • Ability to determine the suitability of system solutions and the planned approach including cost, schedule, and associated risk.
  • Competent in Systems Thinking, Holistic Lifecycles and Systems Engineering Management.
  • A collaborative leader, proactive and high energy with demonstrable experience in matrix stakeholder engagement.

What experience you need to be the successful Chief Engineer:

  • Program Manager and System Architect Certification
  • Knowledge of and experience with UK MoD programs for SONAR, RADAR, Communication, Aircraft Certification, Electronic Warfare Systems, Cyber programs, or integration of cyber standards within MoD or UKIC programs and training and simulation programs.
  • Commercial IT Systems Experience
