Location: Rugeley, Staffordshire
Salary: £Competitive + Benefits

Are you passionate about developing advanced sensing technologies that perform in the world's most demanding environments?

This is an opportunity to work across the full product lifecycle, combining analogue electronics, embedded systems and sensor physics to create robust, high-performance sensing solutions capable of operating in harsh electromagnetic and environmental conditions.

The Role

As a Sensors Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing advanced sensing systems, integrating sensing elements with analogue electronics, embedded processing and digital communications to deliver accurate, reliable measurement systems.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to everything from sensor selection and hardware design through to firmware development, environmental testing and product validation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop sensing solutions for demanding defence and maritime applications.
  • Select, evaluate and integrate sensing technologies including magnetic, capacitive, acoustic, pressure and inertial (MEMS) sensors.
  • Design analogue signal conditioning electronics including low-noise amplifiers, filters, power supplies and sensor drive circuits.
  • Develop mixed-signal hardware including PCB schematics and layouts.
  • Design embedded electronics and firmware for sensor acquisition, processing and communication.
  • Integrate microcontrollers with analogue front-end electronics and digital interfaces.
  • Develop calibration methods and validate sensor performance against accuracy, resolution and environmental requirements.
  • Conduct laboratory testing and environmental qualification, including vibration, thermal and EMC testing.
  • Support prototype development, troubleshooting and continuous product improvement.
  • Produce high-quality engineering documentation throughout the product development lifecycle.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing analogue and mixed-signal electronic circuits.
  • Knowledge of sensor technologies and transducer integration.
  • Experience developing signal conditioning circuits, including amplifiers, filters and power circuitry.
  • Embedded systems experience with firmware development in C/C++.
  • Experience working with microcontrollers and digital communication protocols including SPI, I²C and CAN.
  • PCB schematic capture and layout experience.
  • Experience using electronic design and simulation tools such as Altium Designer, SPICE or MATLAB.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Desirable

  • Fluxgate magnetometer design, including drive and sense electronics.
  • Maritime electric field sensor design.
  • MEMS sensor development and inertial sensing technologies.
  • STM32 microcontroller development.
  • Low-noise analogue design for precision measurement systems.
  • Sensor calibration and characterisation.
  • Environmental testing and qualification.
  • Defence, maritime or other high-reliability engineering sectors.
