Brief

The successful candidate will join the business at an entry level and be provided with extensive specialist training and career development. This will be largely provided at a Royal Navy Base on the West Coast of Scotland and may include periods of detached duty in Bristol, Plymouth and the USA. Thereafter, you will become an integral part of the organisation responsible for the build, test and commissioning of systems onboard the new class submarines currently under construction in Barrow-in-Furness, where you will be based.

Skills developed through specialist training will enable, the use of bespoke analytical software and a broad range of technical disciplines to:

  • Work as a fully integrated member of the Dreadnought team; performing analysis of test results from submarine-based technical systems.
  • Witness performance related test procedures on board submarines.
  • Perform technical analysis of contractor sea trials, which entail short periods away on board the platform, whilst it is at sea.
  • Produce comprehensive system level evaluation reports which verify and validate system performance.
  • Provide technical consultancy, advice and support to management, the Ministry of Defence, and other stakeholders to ensure that customer needs are met.
  • Production of presentations and technical reports in support of customer and stakeholder meetings.

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Graduate Engineer will include:

  • An HND/Degree from an accredited university / college with an analysis related discipline such as Mathematics/Statistics/Physics or related STEM discipline or equivalent experience / combined education
  • An analytical, structured and thorough approach to problem solving
  • Pro-active approach to providing solutions to emergent challenges
  • Able to take ownership of tasks as delegated and drive them through to successful conclusion to agreed deadlines
  • Ability to function as part of a team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding the requirement to adhere to applicable documentation within a highly prescriptive environment
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office Software Suite.

What experience you need to be the successful Graduate Engineer:

  • An open mind and questioning attitude
  • Experience of submarine related subsystems
  • Industry/Academic experience in a related analytical discipline
  • Experience in a customer facing environment.

Largely based on site at Barrow-In-Furness, but will need to travel from time to time for training in Scotland at Faslane and potentially down to Plymouth as part of the development plan for this role. May also require occasional travel to the US for on site specialist training maybe once every few years.
