About the Mechanical Engineer Role:

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to join a global consultancy with offices in 125 different countries?

Our client specialises within a range of different sectors, for example; Energy, Water, Transportation, Property, Defence and government services.

This position is for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Building Services team in Leeds where we can offer the right individual the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects with Blue-Chip Developers!

The work would be a mixture of survey, design work, office-based project administration and site attendances.

Key Duties for the Mechanical Engineer Role:

  • Produce detailed design calculations and sketches in accordance with the project requirements
  • Liaison with Senior Engineers and Engineering Technicians regarding design and drawing
  • Carrying out detailed Mechanical Building Services Design Engineering on new build and refurbishment construction projects.
  • Assist senior staff in feasibility studies, concept and scheme design stages
  • Attend design team meetings alongside other staff members.
  • Inspect and report on mechanical building services systems.
  • Work will typically be undertaken in conjunction with senior staff assisting in the survey, design, specification and contract administration process of the projects.
  • The aim is to increase the design, construction and practical knowledge of the individual to achieve Senior Engineer status.
  • Utilise Building Services software for calculations.
  • Undertake Mechanical design work consisting of surveys, design, drawings and specifications for projects.
  • Work in conjunction with other design team members as required as part of an overall project team. Ensure the design and maintenance of building systems meets legislative and health and safety requirements
  • Produce marked up drawings for CAD by others or direct CAD design drawings for issue.
  • Select and specify products, equipment and installation standards relating to Mechanical services suitable for the costing and installation by Contractors.
  • Attend project design meetings, technical meetings, value engineering workshops, and risk workshops as required by the project in conjunction with more senior staff.

General Everyday Duties for the Mechanical Engineer:

  • Working closely with the Line Manager to ensure full project delivery
  • Use own initiative and demonstrate independent working ability when required
  • Complete detailed design calculations based on based on guidance from Line Manager and sound technical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Checking design work carried out by junior colleagues.
  • Attend project / client meetings and assist with site inspections and surveys as required.
  • Assist in mentoring junior staff, providing advice and guidance to share technical expertise.
  • Conducting activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Carrying out work activities which support the Quality Management System.

Essential Skills for the Mechanical Engineer:

Ability to design principle mechanical systems taken from a concept level of design through to detailed design (BSRIA BG6 Stage 4A) including:

  • Ventilation design
  • Chilled water
  • Comfort Cooling design
  • Domestic hot and cold-water systems / Public Health
  • Heating systems
  • Above Ground drainage
  • HVAC control principles
  • Use of Hevacomp / IES or equivalent
  • Ability to view and interpret drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of Building Regulations Part L compliance associated with the systems above.
  • Use of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel

Desirable Skills for the Mechanical Engineer

The following will be part of the candidate's development and on the project, training will be provided if these competencies need developing:

  • Ability to design principle mechanical systems taken from a concept level of design through to detailed design (BSRIA BG6 Stage 4A) including:
  • Ability to view and interpret drawings in Revit
  • Medical gases
  • Ability to view and interpret drawings in Revit
  • Basic knowledge of electrical services
  • Use of CAD, Revit

Qualifications

  • Qualifications commensurate with the Underpinning and Knowledge Requirements for Incorporated Engineer aligned to either IMechE or CIBSE requirements.
  • Or on a path to or desire to gain that level of understanding.

Experience

Min 2 years post Graduate experience
