Obsolescence Engineer needed for a leading Electronics company based in Wimborne who are looking to employ an experienced Obsolescence Engineer who will be responsible for specification and approval of components, obsolescence management and support to the manufacturing and test departments to resolve problems.

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Obsolescence Engineer will include:

  • Provide a service to projects to advise on obsolescence management processes and strategies available.

  • Provide a service to projects to advise on the selection of components to ensure that contractual requirements are satisfied before approval is authorized.

  • Provide a service to approve new components that are to be entered onto the company ERP system.

  • Provide a service to validate items lists before issue in respect of component definition and approval.

  • Perform component and obsolescence engineering; including substitution and justification of alternative parts to meet project/customer reliability, safety and legislative requirements.

  • Perform reviews of and action product change notices (PCNs) provided by component suppliers or as a result of obsolescence monitoring performed by third party suppliers.

  • Perform detailed analysis of specific aspects of existing equipment to establish requirements for component replacement or refurbishment.

  • Provide support to the manufacturing and test departments to assist in the resolution of build and test problems.

  • Produce technical reports, clearly identifying the preferred course of action and why after analysis of problems.

  • Liaison with suppliers regarding supply and support of third party equipment.

  • Support discussions of proposed solutions with customer representatives to agree the optimum solution in terms of cost, timescale and ease of implementation.

  • Support supplier audits in relation to component storage, traceability, testing facilities and counterfeit avoidance.

What you need to be the successful Obsolescence Engineer:

In order to be the successful Obsolescence Engineer and have a chance to gain such an exciting opportunity you will ideally need to have the following:

  • HND / HNC or Degree level education in electronic engineering or related subject.

  • Experience in analogue and digital electronics down to component level, including familiarity with specification of components for high reliability applications, preferably in a regulated industry.

  • Good knowledge of electrical, electromechanical and active and passive electronic components.

  • Understanding of obsolescence management standards and best practice (BS EN IEC 62402:2019).

  • Experience in the integration of design data and ERP/MRP tools.
