What the role of the Optical Engineer entails:

Some of the main duties of the Optical Engineer will include:

  • Optical system requirements trade-off analysis to support system architecture decisions
  • Detailed design of optical sub-systems that operate as part of an overall integrated solution including: miniature projector systems based on COTs display devices, relay lens assemblies, free-form surface definition and spectrally selective reflective visors and combiners
  • Assembly and formal photometric testing of prototype and production standard optical systems, including testing individual optical elements through to complete augmented reality systems
  • Generation of detailed optical sub-system specifications to allow out-sourcing of assemblies to optical subcontractors
  • Working within multidisciplinary teams to ensure that overall systems designs are consistent with optical design constraints

What experience you need to be the successful Optical Engineer:

Essential:

  • Physics/Science/Optics based Degree
  • Experience in the application of optical design tools for geometric ray tracing of imaging or illumination optics, for example projection, camera or microscope lens assemblies
  • Experience with the use of optics modelling tools such as ZEMAX (sequential and non-sequential), CodeV, FRED, TracePro

Desirable:

  • Experience in specification of optical materials, optical processes and tolerances associated with series manufacture
  • Experience in photometric measurement systems to verify the performance of manufactured designs
  • Experience in assembly and test of prototype optical systems
  • Experience with the use of Matlab and Labview
