Safety Engineer

SAFETY ENGINEER


Job Purpose

  • To conduct the following safety engineering tasks, for a broad range of aerospace design projects (from complex modifications to new aircraft designs):
    • Failure modes and effects analysis / failure modes, effects & criticality analysis
    • Functional hazard analysis/assessment
    • Aircraft/system safety analysis/assessment
    • Common cause analysis
    • Particular Risk Analysis
    • Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Case Reports
  • To define safety and reliability targets and requirements for aircraft, systems, sub-systems and components
  • To define, plan and execute aerospace safety engineering work packages, to meet performance, time and cost requirements

Principal Accountability

  • To the Chief Systems Engineer, for:
    • The effective and efficient completion of all assigned safety engineering tasks and delivery of associated outputs, to meet performance, time and cost requirements
    • The validity and quality of safety engineering outputs; and their compliance with airworthiness and environmental requirements, and design engineering governance, standards and practices

Requirements

  • Must be:
    • Experienced aerospace safety analysis engineer
    • Expert in the conduct of the safety assessment process for airborne systems and equipment, in accordance with SAE ARP4761 (Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment) or similar structured process(es) for aerospace safety assessment
    • Expert in the use of software tools for safety and reliability analysis - eg Reliasoft
    • Familiar with the principles and practical application of:
      • SAE ARP5150 - Safety Assessment of Transport Airplanes in Commercial Service
      • SAE ARP5151 - Safety Assessment of General Aviation Airplanes and Rotorcraft in Commercial Service
    • Familiar with the principles and practical application of:
      • RTCA DO-178 / EUROCAE ED-12 - Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification
      • RTCA DO-245 / EUROCAE ED-80 - Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware
      • UK Def Stan 00-56 - Safety Management Requirements for Defence System
    • Familiar with the principles and practical application of SAE ARP4754 (Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems), or similar structured process(es) for aerospace systems engineering
  • Must have:
    • Experience of working as an aerospace safety analysis engineer in any combination of the following:
      • UK Military Aviation Authority approved design organization
      • UK Ministry of Defence project team
      • An engineering consultancy providing specialist safety engineering services to the above organizations
