Lead the Safety Case Engineering team to provide expert resources to the company for the production and maintenance of safety cases and reports for all facilities on site.
Output from the section provides assurance to the client that all process hazards are identified and managed to meet the requirements of legislation. Safety Cases are developed in line with those for previously owned and licensed sites.
Outside of the organisation:
(i) proactive in securing work within and delivering Safety Case & Safety Engineering expertise to the broader fusion community (including ITER and DEMO);
(ii) liaise with the broader UK nuclear safety case engineering with respect to the identification, sharing and progression of best practice.
The post-holder will be the local authority on Safety Cases and acknowledged as the expert in the field.
Accountability for the recruitment and ongoing performance of the Safety Case Engineering team.
Manage the development and maintenance of Safety Cases for all Facilities;
Working with ATO holders to ensure these are prepared as required and with the Chief Engineer function in the fitness for service assessment of implemented safety related equipment.
Where safety cases are established, manage the assessment of modifications and provide advice to designers on the safety implications of their proposals.
Engage and respond to external peer reviewers, whom are necessary in order to independently assure the effectiveness of the teams safety cases and safety arguments.
Co-ordinate expertise from within the organisation and from external specialist service providers to deliver Safety Case and Safety Engineering activities.
Take overall responsibility for owning and developing Safety Case procedures, recognising the clients position as being a site with radiological hazards but not licensed under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965.
Provide cross company leadership to influence and communicate the desired culture for Safety Case issues including integration with technical change. Includes training via ATOh Training Course, ATOh Forum, cross-site Masterclasses and targeted coaching of developing engineers.
Identify, influence and encourage continual improvement to ensure that the Safety Cases reflect best practice across the industry.
Represents the company at Safety Directors Forum Safety Case Group and other relevant forums.
Seeks relevant contacts and influence across the nuclear industry on an ongoing basis in order to enhance the effectiveness of UKAEA Safety Case activities and the organisation's standing in the wider community.
