Salary: £60,000 - £75,000 Per Annum

Join our dynamic team as a Senior Design Manager in Birmingham, working for a top-tier building, infrastructure, and engineering organisation. You will play a pivotal role in managing and coordinating the design of construction projects, from the tender stage to the completion of construction and the production of operating and maintenance manuals. While your primary focus will be in the East Midlands, you may also work on projects in the wider Midlands area, including the West Midlands. Projects will range in value from £2m to £40m, providing an exciting and varied workload.

Job Description:

• Manage and coordinate the design team and design portion subcontractors throughout both tender and construction phases, ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions on time.
• Chair design team meetings and workshops to guide the design development process effectively.
• Produce, review, and update design programs, information release schedules, risk registers, and technical query schedules.
• Utilize internet-based document management systems based on client needs.
• Assess tender documentation thoroughly to identify design risks and opportunities, proposing innovative solutions.
• Vet and appoint the design team, ensuring acceptable terms and conditions, defined lead designer roles, and comprehensive services.
• Collaborate with preconstruction and project teams to ensure robust design portion subcontract inquiries and value-for-money solutions.
• Continuously review the design, identifying interface, buildability, and coordination issues, and resolving them with the design and project teams and specialist subcontractors.
• Develop innovative design solutions in partnership with the design team and supply chain, including the production of high-quality value engineering solutions.
• Manage client, subcontractor, and professional team relationships to resolve design queries and deliver timely, high-quality solutions.
• Assist with bidding management activities, including developing design programs, risk, and VE schedules, writing technical responses, coordinating design information, and attending post-tender interviews.
• Report to the Regional Pre-construction Manager and collaborate with the Bid Manager, Project Manager, and the project team.
• Depending on project size and complexity, you may lead a design management team or support a Senior Design Manager on larger projects.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

• Proven track record in design management activities at both tender and construction stages.
• Experience in healthcare and education (schools, further, and higher) sector or ideally, experience in accommodation and commercial sectors.
• Familiarity with framework schemes and various tender methods (single stage, two stage, negotiated contracts).
• Strong technical expertise in architectural, structural, civil, and building services design solutions.
• Experience in substructure design and structural frame solutions.
• Good knowledge of current CDM and Building Regulations.
• Understanding of BREEAM and the planning application process.
• Effective communication skills
• Analytical problem-solving skills.
• Strong planning, organization, and project management abilities.
• Effective leadership skills, ideally with people management experience.
• Construction-based HNC (or equivalent technical knowledge).
• Proficiency in Microsoft packages (Outlook, Excel, Word) and document management systems (e.g., Powerproject, Team plan).
• Valid driving license and CSCS card.
