Software Engineer

6 month contract


Opportunity available for a Software Engineer on a 6 month contract to join a globally established defence company as part of their Software team in the Staffordshire area. Reporting to the Software Team Leader, the successful Software Engineer will carry out a vital role within a dedicated team developing real time and analysis software for Underwater Measurement ranges and vessel degaussing systems.

The Software Engineer will work closely with other project members developing solutions to successfully meet project objectives. The successful Software Engineer will work on a range of software engineering activities from bid to delivery in the following areas.

  • Data acquisition systems and control systems for naval applications
  • Underwater Signature Analysis (electromagnetic and acoustic) & Acoustic signal processing

Key responsibilities
In this role the candidate will be responsible for a wide range of engineering activities covering all stages of a project from bid to delivery. Working closely with other team members and sub contractors, you will plan and carry out your activities to develop technical solutions, which successfully meet with the overall objectives of your project. The role will include responsibility for:

  • The technical performance of the software produced
  • Management of the software requirements
  • Technical point of contact with the customer for software issues
  • Carrying out assigned elements of the design
  • Candidate will also be required to support other activities in the business; business improvement
  • Initiatives and marketing support

Skillset / Experience required of the Software Engineer:

  • Be educated to a minimum of degree level in computer science, engineering or a numerate scientific discipline with relevant software engineering experience
  • Programming skills and experience in C or C++
  • Familiarity with programming in one or more of the following environments: Windows, Linux or QNX 6 Neutrino
  • Experience of Software/Hardware integration
  • Experienced in producing software in accordance with ISO9001
  • Experience in two or more of the following areas: data acquisition, real time programming, sensor interfacing, LAN Networking / TCP/IP and hardware interfacing
  • Good written English and software specification writing skills
  • Ideally have experience in Visual Studio and MFC
  • Some experience of either UML (or a similar design methodology), or signature processing, or Simulink or modern control theory
  • Ideally have presentation and training skills and be confident in a customer facing role
