Specific Job Description [JP]

A talented Software Engineering Manager is required to join the Software Engineering Team at Ampthill. As a Software Engineering Manager you will lead on programmes through the full Software Engineering Lifecycle, with focus on the Software Design, Implementation and Unit Testing aspects of software development.

Successful candidates will be responsible for leading a range of software engineering tasks across the development lifecycle, including but not limited to; assisting with requirements analysis, software design, implementation, and software testing and will be required to support integration and test activities. They will be expected apply their knowledge of computer systems and software engineering best practice in the performance of their duties and be responsible for ensuring software compliance standards are met by the application of appropriate processes, procedures and tools throughout the software development lifecycle. Successful candidates will be expected to be knowledgeable and proficient in the application of a wide range of software engineering practices and will display a proactive and innovative approach to developing complex technical solutions to difficult customer problems, working closely with the Project Chief Engineer. They will be responsible for leading accurate estimating/planning and will be expected to manage their own and Teams workload effectively to ensure that project milestones are met. The position requires solid software management knowledge and an understanding of the software development lifecycle.

Required skills, qualifications and experience [JP]

  • Proven and demonstrable evidence of capabilities in software engineering management and technical leadership
  • Proven and demonstrable evidence of capabilities in the software development lifecycle using Java on Linux and Windows platforms.
  • Proven and demonstrable experience of leading development of significant size software programmes
  • Proven and demonstrable experience of planning and control activities within a multi-team programme environment
  • Proven experience of software product development to cost and schedule metrics.
  • Proven experience working with an Agile methodology within a standard waterfall programme.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self starter with the ability to lead by example

Desired skills, qualifications and experience [JP]

Experience of some of the following would also be desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in the completion of software engineering activities within a government customer environment
  • Experience of complex military C4I software systems, involving digital mapping, informational presentation and command and control
  • Experience implementing software in a safety related environment
  • Experience of software product development in accordance with standards such as DO-178B or DO-278.
  • Knowledge of Requirements Capture and UML modelling tools such as: IBM Doors and Rhapsody
  • Knowledge and familiarity with unit testing and unit test/mocking frameworks (e.g. Junit, Mockito or GoogleTest/Parasoft)
  • Knowledge of Real-Time Operating Systems (e.g. Greenhills, QNX, VxWorks)
  • Knowledge of
  • the use of software source control tools (e.g. Mercurial/Git) and issue tracking tools (e.g. Jira).

Travelling involved for the role? Licence Required?

Hybrid of working on site and from home roughly 50/50 split between on site and at home. Will have occasional requirement as needed to travel to customer sites, usually relatively minimal but will come up and be a requirement every now and then including the potential for occasional international travel.

Team Size / Structure / Team Fit

Will ultimately be ultimately responsible for a team of up to 40/50 software engineers of various levels, including some team leaders, down to junior developers.

Role Synopsis - What does this position do and why?

This is someone capable of leading a large software development team. Experienced in full on programme delivery role for a number of years for software programmes they have seen through from start to finish. Able to bring that experience to bear to lead the team and navigate the team around challenges to ensure delivery to time and budget.

Defence experience is not essential, but do need formal product development leadership experience and strong knowledge of Java. Experience or at least appreciation of developing a software product that has multiple variants/spin off products that are all related is also essential.
