Lead Design Engineer

UK wide - Full Time - Permanent

£65,000 - £70,000 + car allowance

Brief

Lead Design Engineer needed for a energy and utilities organisation based UK wide who are looking to employ a Lead Design Engineer to be a part of their mission to decarbonisation. This role will involve travel to the company's energy centres across the UK

What the role entails:

As Lead Design Engineer, you will be:

  • CEng Chartered Engineer status and engaged on a programme of Continual Professional Development.
  • Approximately 10-15 years of experience in a relevant field, including at least 3-5 years in a similar role.
  • Knowledgeable of relevant CIBSE Guides, British Standards, BSRIA, IGEM and other industry authority publications.
  • Understanding of the Construction & Design Management Regulations 2015.
  • Able to size and specify valves, instruments and piping components.
  • Experienced with the creation and detailing of Bills of Material for plant equipment, valves and instrumentation.
  • Able to size and specify major plant such as boilers, CHP engines, pumps, heat exchangers and chillers.
  • Knowledgeable of the design and configuration of boiler plant, CHP engines and chillers.
  • Experienced in site visits and surveys to collect data for creating designs.
  • Experienced in site attendance for snagging activities and commissioning support.
  • Liaising with both internal and external clients, contractors and suppliers.
  • Participating in both internal and external design meetings, technical reviews, HAZID and HAZOP studies.
  • Creating Piping & instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Engineering Schematics in 2D AutoCAD
  • Creating conceptual layouts and designs for estimating and sales support in 2D AutoCAD.
  • Technically able to interpret and understand the outputs of piping stress analysis and to identify design improvements.
  • Write sub-contractor scopes and major plant tender documentation.
  • Create Operation & Maintenance manual content for delivered designs.
  • Review and Approve Design Engineer and Graduate technical documentation, calculations and drawings
  • Able to manage, mentor and assist the development of Design Engineers and Graduate Engineers.
  • The responsibility for attending major project kick-off meetings, leading the projects forward and briefing supporting engineers.

Responsibilities for the Lead Design Engineer position

  • To upkeep and manage project drawing registers.
  • Project document control & management in line with the company Quality Management System.
  • Operate within and adhere to the company Health & Safety policy and procedures.
  • Communicate the status of projects and tasks through the departmental reporting structure.
  • Undertaking engineering calculations, analysis and problem solving.
  • Fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, energy transfer and stress analysis.

Desirable

  • Writing system control philosophies, sequences and strategy.
  • A keen interest in combined heat and power (CHP) installations, district energy networks and energy saving technology.
  • Writing technical specifications for system design, manufacture, installation and operation.
  • Experience of managing both clients and suppliers with regards to Employer's Information Requirements (EIR) documentation.
  • Delivery of technical toolbox talks and creation of good practice guidance to share knowledge.
  • Full 3D modelling and detailed design of energy centre, CHP, boiler, chiller and district heating network installations in 3D AutoCAD & CADWorx Plant Professional.
  • Experience of undertaking piping stress analysis using Caesar II or similar.
  • Supplementary safety and industry specific training (such as CSCS card, IOSH, CIBSE courses).
  • Supplementary courses and qualifications in AutoCAD, CADWorx Plant Professional or other industry leading CAD and modelling packages.
  • A knowledge of specialist design areas such as steam systems, PED, ATEX, DSEAR & COMAH.
