Job Title: Senior Human Factors Engineer
Location: Remote with occasional visits to client site in Plymouth (approximately 2 days per month)

Expenses: Travel and subsistence to client site payable by agreement

Purpose
As a Senior Human Factors Engineer, you will play a critical role in supporting engineering and scientific disciplines operating in high-hazard, regulated industries. Your contributions will include:
- Supporting the design and development of new or modified site systems, processes, and facilities.
 - Providing human factors input into safety assessments and safety case processes.
 - Ensuring the successful implementation and validation of human performance elements in operational settings.
 
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Principal Engineer (Human Factors), your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the Principal Engineer in overseeing the Human Factors discipline, covering design, safety assessment, and human performance aspects.
 - Mentoring and developing junior team members, including those in graduate schemes.
 - Conducting human factors assessments for ergonomic design, safety evaluation, and validation of human performance in high-hazard systems and processes. Assessments include task analysis, error analysis, workload analysis, ergonomic design, and human reliability analysis.
 - Preparing scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules for human factors assessments.
 - Reviewing and verifying assessment work performed by team members.
 - Engaging with regulatory bodies on Human Factors-related issues.
 - Promoting human-centered design principles and influencing socio-technical system design development.
 - Providing guidance and advice across seven human factors domains: Human Factors Engineering, System Safety, Health Hazard Assessment, Personnel, Manpower, Training, Organization, and Social.
 - Ensuring behavioral science applications are evidence-based.
 - Staying informed of advancements in Human Factors, Human Performance, and Industrial Psychology to ensure best practices are applied.
 - Supporting the development and delivery of Human Factors training.
 - Acting as a point of contact for engineering disciplines seeking guidance on Human Factors-related challenges.
 - Conducting site incident investigations to identify causes and recommend preventative measures.
 
Qualifications
- Education: 
- A first degree in Psychology, complemented by an MSc in Occupational, Applied, or Industrial Psychology.
 - Alternatively, a degree in Ergonomics or an engineering discipline with a strong psychological/ergonomics focus (or equivalent).
 
 - Membership: 
- Registered Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors or Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society.
 
 
Experience
- Significant experience in high-hazard process industries (e.g., nuclear, defense, petrochemical).
 - Solid understanding of nuclear safety assessment principles and safety case production.
 - Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) techniques such as HEART, THERP, and APJ.
 - Application of Human Factors in engineering system/process design.
 - Knowledge of structured training development principles.
 - Ability to understand and communicate engineering concepts effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
 - Experience in managing workloads to meet tight deadlines.
 - Proficiency in applying psychological ethics in research and professional practice.
 - Incident and event investigation experience.
 
Requirements
- Active Security Clearance (SC level).
 - Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
