The Role:
We are seeking a proactive Senior Manufacturing Engineer to collaborate closely with Engineering, Production, and Project teams to ensure new product designs are manufacturable, testable, and aligned with production goals. The role will focus on driving Design for Manufacture (DFM), supporting New Product Introduction (NPI), and implementing continuous improvement initiatives across production processes.
Key Responsibilities as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer:
- Work with cross-functional teams to review new product designs, applying DFM principles and ensuring standardisation and ease of manufacture/test.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and DFM sessions to influence design decisions early.
- Support prototype builds, identify issues, and resolve problems before full-scale production.
- Develop and submit manufacturing plans covering layouts, process maps, cycle times, resourcing, tooling, capital equipment, facility upgrades, and workstation setup.
- Lead the NPI phase, ensuring quality, cost, configuration, traceability, and project timelines are achieved; provide training to operations staff where required.
- Design and implement new production lines, facility layouts, and associated CapEx submissions.
- Develop jigs, fixtures, and tooling to improve efficiency, material handling, and standardisation.
- Conduct time and motion studies, value stream mapping, and line balancing to optimise productivity.
- Create and maintain routings within the ERP system, defining process steps and standard times.
- Perform root cause analysis on non-conformances, implement corrective actions, and support quality improvements.
- Manage equipment maintenance scheduling to reduce downtime and production stoppages.
- Estimate costs, cycle times, and resource requirements for new designs; monitor production against targets and investigate variances.
- Develop and maintain clear work instructions to ensure consistent operational standards.
- Drive waste reduction by targeting scrap, rework, and non-value-added activities using Lean/CI methods.
- Collaborate with Procurement and Production Support to improve material flow and reduce inventory.
- Stay current with best practices, new techniques, and equipment to enhance the company's manufacturing capability.
- Support production in achieving on-time delivery, attend daily production meetings, and assist in resolving issues to minimise disruption.
- Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety policies, addressing risks to maintain a safe workplace.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline, with significant manufacturing experience.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, TQM).
- Proficiency in work measurement, standardisation, and time study techniques.
- Competence in ERP systems, including routings and Bill of Materials (BoM) structures.
- Familiarity with 3D CAD packages and strong ability in 2D CAD design.
- Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, schematics, and change control processes.
- Experience managing small teams (desirable).
