Brief
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer needed for a well-known Facilities Management organisation based in either London or Manchester who are looking to employ an experienced and well-rounded
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer that takes pride in their work.
The successful candidate would be responsible for the delivery of high-quality mechanical designs and technical support across decarbonisation and sustainable retrofit projects. This includes the design and optimisation of HVAC systems, heat pumps, and building automation systems, supporting the full project lifecycle from early feasibility through to construction and commissioning.
This position requires technical leadership, design management, and mentoring responsibilities within a multidisciplinary environment. The role supports public and private sector clients in achieving their decarbonisation and net-zero ambitions.
Working closely with the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, this role ensures compliance with industry regulations, fosters innovation, and supports the development of junior engineers within the team.

What the role entails:
Some of the main duties of the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will include:
- Develop mechanical designs across RIBA Stages 2 to 4, with ongoing technical support to the project team through Stages 5 to 6.
- Design and integrate low-carbon energy solutions, including heat pumps, district heating, HVAC, BMS and other energy-efficiency measures typical of sustainable retrofit into new and existing buildings.
- Support energy modelling and system performance simulations using IES, Energy Pro, and other tools.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards (CIBSE, PAS 2035, MCS, UK Building Regs) and guidelines.
- Participate in the implementation and coordination of BIM and CAD-based design processes.
- Manage designs and support end-to-end project lifecycle delivery, helping to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Conduct design reviews, ensuring design solutions meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards
- Assist in identifying design risks and contribute to risk mitigation strategies and manage the design risk registers.
What experience you need to be the successful Senior Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Experience in design and design management, risk assessment, and project delivery of sustainable retrofit, low-carbon technologies, and energy efficiency projects.
- Proficiency in design-, energy modelling- and simulation software such as IES, Energy Pro, PVsol, Termis, NEMO, and Netsim.
- Experience working across full RIBA stages on multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience in public sector or funding-driven decarbonisation projects such as PSDS and WH/ SHDF.
- Minimum of 6 to 10 years' experience in mechanical building services design.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (BEng or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with CIBSE or IMechE preferred.
- Retrofit Designer Certification is highly desirable, but not essential.
