Senior Project Manager


Senior Project Manager needed for a leading Defence company who specialise in Maritime, who are based in Hampshire. They are looking to employ an experienced Senior Project Manager, who has experience of systems and software engineering disciplines, someone who has project Management qualification or equivalent and someone who has proven ability to identify, mitigate risks and resolve issues before impact to maintain project timescales and cost, ideally within Defence and Maritime.

What the role entails:

You will be managing a multi-disciplined team of highly technical system and software engineers across multiple locations developing, integration and gaining acceptance of complex development projects in the Maritime domain. The projects range from 'in-house' development through to procurement of solutions.

Some of the main duties of the Senior Project Manager will include:

  • Meeting contractual obligations
  • Achieving excellent customer satisfaction
  • Delivery of project to time, cost and quality
  • Production of open, accurate and timely financial and workload forecasts to support planning within the business
  • Build relationships to enable successful engagement with a broad range of stakeholders (external and internal) often with competing interests
  • Management of subcontracts, some with significant development work
  • Application of appropriate project governance in-line with the companies Operating Framework
  • Develop and maintain key project documents including Project Management Plan, Risk Register and Project Reporting Pack
  • With the Lead Engineer, leadership of the project through the system engineering lifecycle, ensuring that the lifecycle artefacts (business cases, documents, design reviews, etc.) are produced as required
  • Support the business to develop future pipeline work
  • Promotion of best practice within the project and ensure that previous lessons learnt are adopted and new lessons identified for future benefit
  • In conjunction with Programme Managers, develop any appropriate follow on work

What you need to be the successful Senior Project Manager:

In order to be the successful Senior Project Manager and have a chance to gain such an exciting opportunity you will ideally need to have the following:

Experience & Qualifications

  • Project Management qualification or equivalent
  • Proven ability to decompose complex issues, to an appropriate level of detail, in a methodical manner
  • Proven ability to identify, mitigate risks and resolve issues before impact to maintain project timescales and cost
  • Experience of procurement and tendering processes (e.g. the production of specifications, definition of supplier selection criteria and contracting) and management of suppliers under contract
  • Experience of systems and software engineering disciplines and lifecycle to develop complex products in the defence domain
  • Ideally qualified to Degree level or in Engineering/Mathematics/Physics although relevant, equivalent experience is acceptable


  • Drive and determination to achieve successful project delivery overcoming problems and issues as they arise and preferably beforehand
  • Track record of successful delivery of development, build and system integration of complex projects
  • Pragmatic and reasonable
  • Good problem-solving abilities
  • Open, honest and enthusiastic team member
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to exercise good commercial judgement
  • An understanding of budgeting and resource allocation


  • An understanding of the wider Defence and Security context
  • Knowledge of any, or all of:
  • Information Management Systems
  • Electronic warfare test systems
  • Sonobouy test systems
  • Electromagnetic test and analysis systems
  • Acoustic signature measurement systems
  • Radar Cross Section measurement systems
  • Aircraft Mission System test systems
  • Must be eligible for Security Clearance
