System Safety Engineer
Defence Aerospace
Location: Bristol or Yeovil (3 days on site per week)
Rate: £65-£70 per hour (Inside IR35, Umbrella)
Duration: 12 months, starting ASAP
UK Citizenship required to achieve SC clearance.
A leading defence engineering organisation is seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to support safety assurance and certification across major UK defence aerospace programmes. The role involves developing safety cases and hazard analyses in accordance with established defence standards, ensuring safe and compliant operation of critical systems.
Role Overview
You will join a collaborative safety engineering team responsible for delivering comprehensive safety evidence for complex platforms and services. Working closely with safety leads, assurance teams, and certification authorities, you will apply structured safety methodologies to support ongoing project approvals within the UK defence environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply system safety and hazard analysis tools to define and maintain safety requirements.
- Develop Safety Case artefacts and arguments using Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) or Claims Argument Evidence (CAE).
- Conduct Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), System Safety Assessments (SSA), and Common Cause Analyses (CCA).
- Perform Fault Tree and Bowtie Analyses to support safety assurance.
- Collaborate across engineering functions and with external stakeholders to maintain safety integrity throughout the lifecycle.
- Support the creation and maintenance of Service Assurance Cases.
Essential Requirements
- Degree (or higher) in Aerospace, Systems, or Safety Engineering.
- Experience in aerospace or defence engineering.
- Experience in a System Safety Engineering role.
- Strong knowledge of Def Stan 00-056, MIL-STD-882E, and safety-critical design principles.
- Demonstrated experience producing structured safety cases and safety arguments.
- Skilled in safety analysis techniques (FHA, FTA, Bowtie, CCA, SSA).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience
- Formal qualification in System Safety Engineering.
- Experience developing or managing Service Assurance Cases.
- Familiarity with certification and assurance processes for military platforms.
