Head of Engineering


Head of Engineering needed for a market leading Aerospace organisation based in Bedfordshire who are looking to employ an experienced Head of Engineering with proven experience of successfully leading an engineering team through a period of growth and capability-building, proven line management experience, including mentoring/coaching and staff development, and the Aerospace Industry.

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Head of Engineering will include:

  • To provide leadership and direction to the design and airworthiness team
  • Direct line management responsibilities for all Chiefs and Engineering Project Leads, including personal development, coaching and mentoring
  • Responsible for the development of strategic and long-term plans within the engineering group in support of the business mission & objectives
  • To ensure that suitably competent and trained staff are employed to complete the function allocated to them and that succession planning is in place to adequately develop the company's staff and the necessary expertise to sustain the company's business and achieve the company mission & objectives
  • Responsible for ensuring that the number of billable productive hours required by the company are worked, without exceeding project budgets and in balance with the needs of the non-billable work required to maintain/improve procedures and to support business development. This involves close working with Business Development and Project Management
  • To act as the point of contact for clients on technical matters where a high-level perspective is required on the strategic direction or in situations of escalation
  • Ensure an up-to-date industry knowledge
  • Any other reasonable duties requested by management

What you need to be the successful Head of Engineering:

In order to be the successful Head of Engineering and have a chance to gain such an exciting opportunity you will ideally need to have the following:

  • Minimum of first degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline
  • Chartered status preferred
  • Driving Licence preferred
  • Proven experience of successfully leading an engineering team through a period of growth and capability-building
  • Experience in aerospace is preferred but other industries involving High Value Design may be considered
  • Awareness of relevant UK and European airworthiness legislation is preferred
  • Proven line management experience, including mentoring/coaching and staff development
  • Understanding of a business in the context of an industry and the levers and risks that drive and threaten value
  • Numerate and computer literate
  • Familiar with MS Office toolset
  • Long-term complex and strategic problem solving
  • Strong leadership qualities and presence
  • Ability to understand the business and industry realities and the client needs
  • Ability to work autonomously using a combination of general and specialist knowledge and understanding to apply to existing and emerging technology and processes.
  • Openly shares knowledge and understanding
  • Leads in the development, implementation and application of continuously improved working methodology to support strategic objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to build and maintain relationships by engaging stakeholders to establish credibility, solve problems, build consensus and achieve objectives
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal), including clear and concise reporting
  • Good customer interface and presentation skills
  • Capable of coaching others in the application of best practice by translating complex problems into easy to understand terms
  • Ability to plan staff deployment effectively and efficiently
  • Able to prioritise work and operate on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Capable of working under pressure and assiduously to meet deadlines, with keen attention to detail
  • Supports the use of best practice, particularly application of engineering process appropriate to the size, complexity and/or risk of a project
  • Self-motivated and decisive with the ability to adapt to change and competing demands
  • Demonstrates humility
