Head of Construction (Civils) - Major Infrastructure Programme
London | £82,000-£90,000 + Package | Leadership Role within Tier-One Delivery Team

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Construction to join a tier-one main contractor delivering one of the UK's most complex and high-profile infrastructure programmes. This senior leadership role will take accountability for a substantial portfolio of works, including the delivery of five major shafts within a large tunnelling programme.

The position covers the full lifecycle of strategic planning, design and technical assurance, construction delivery, temporary works, and interfaces with TBM and SCL operations. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring the project meets its technical, safety, and programme obligations while working closely with a highly experienced delivery team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior construction professional to step into a pivotal leadership role within a respected contractor on a nationally significant programme.

The Head of Construction will oversee multiple delivery teams and hold accountability for a key section of the programme. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing the delivery strategy for all shaft-related civil engineering activities.
  • Leading multidisciplinary teams involved in planning, shaft sinking, sprayed concrete lining, secondary linings, cross passages, and associated underground works.
  • Managing progress against programme, budget, quality, and assurance requirements.
  • Overseeing permanent and temporary works design development, ensuring technical compliance and constructability.
  • Supervising on-site construction activities, including excavation, lining installation, and associated civils works.
  • Championing a proactive safety culture across all shaft and tunnelling operations.
  • Providing clear reporting to the project leadership team, including progress updates, risks, and mitigation actions.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with the client, supply chain, and wider project stakeholders.

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in heavy civils, tunnelling, or underground construction.
  • Proven leadership experience on major, complex UK infrastructure projects.
  • Strong project and construction management capability, including oversight of multiple work fronts.
  • Recent experience within a main contracting or construction engineering environment.
  • Thorough understanding of UK safety, environmental, and quality regulations.
  • Proficiency in project management systems for scheduling, cost control, and performance monitoring.

This role offers a strong platform for long-term career progression and involvement in nationally critical infrastructure. The package includes:

  • Salary between £82,000 and £90,000
  • £6,500 car allowance
  • London Weighting Allowance (£2,500)
  • 25 days' annual leave + bank holidays
  • Private pension contribution
  • Private healthcare
  • Hybrid working arrangements
  • Strategic leadership position within a major infrastructure partnership
  • Exposure to advanced tunnelling and civils delivery techniques
  • Clear pathway for progression within a globally recognised organisation
