Maintenance & Reliability Manager

The primary objective of the Maintenance & Reliability Manager is to enhance equipment reliability and minimise losses through preventive maintenance. Responsibilities include swiftly and efficiently addressing breakdowns, effectively managing the Shift Engineers and Supervisors. Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer.

Position: Maintenance & Reliability Manager

Salary: £55,000-£65,000 DOE

Location: Thorne, Doncaster

Shift Rotation: Mon-Fri

Key Responsibilities Maintenance & Reliability Manager:

  • Team Leadership: Manage and lead Engineering Supervisors, Shift Engineers, and Machine Minders.
  • System Improvement: Enhance systems of work, procedures, performance, conduct, and behaviour among Shift Engineers and Machine Minders.
  • Support Production Teams: Ensure comprehensive support for Production Teams and Area Managers.

Systems of Work Include:

  • Safe Systems of Work: PTW, Risk Assessments, Method Statements, lock off, PUWER.
  • Food Safety: Tool Box checks, clean as you go, compliance with technical procedures.
  • Work Management: Engineering Shift Handovers, PPM progression, Work Orders, spares management, data entry into Frontline Parana, troubleshooting guides, one-point lessons, work rotas, attendance planning, training, and development planning, supplier support, and scheduling.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Minimum of four years' experience in an engineering role.
  • Familiarity with maintenance information systems, scheduling, report writing, quality systems, and basic financial control.
  • Experience working within cross-functional teams and matrix reporting structures.
  • Strong troubleshooting methodologies and approaches.
  • Excellent man management and leadership skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of site HR systems and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and knowledge of the Frontline system.
  • Comprehensive understanding of FMCG and Food manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in Mechanical, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Electrical, Electronic, and PLC systems.
  • Expertise in engineering maintenance and operation of FMCG and Poultry industry equipment.
  • Commitment to Food Safety, Food Hygiene, and Quality Policies.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement Methods: TPM, CBM, 5S, SMED, COSH/NEBOSH, HACCP Level 3, Food Safety Level 3.

Production Shift Priorities:

  1. Breakdowns
  2. Key Asset/Equipment repairs
  3. Work Order progression
  4. PPM schedule compliance

Non-Production Shift Priorities:

  1. Key Asset/Equipment Predictive Failure repairs
  2. Completion of the weekend work list
  3. PPM schedule compliance

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Act as the main contact for production during engineering issues.
  • Manage shift crewing, holiday, and absence cover.
  • Collaborate with Production Area Managers on discipline, grievances, and briefings.

  13. Compliance with engineering procedures (Shift Handovers, Frontline usage, spares booking)

Tracking and Reporting:

  • Measure, analyse, and improve individual and team performance.
  • Use Pareto analysis to address top issues.
  • Review KPIs weekly with the Site Chief Engineer.

Job Holder Activities:

  • Provide engineering management support to Production Area Managers, the Site Chief Engineer, and the General Manager.
  • Ensure completion and quality of PPM requirements.
  • Support production decision-making during breakdowns.
  • Maintain high standards for Frontline Parana entries and Work Orders.
  • Report on asset care compliance weekly.
  • Distribute and brief technical information to shift-based technicians.
  • Manage the satellite spares system.
  • Work on skills and development needs within the engineering and machine minder teams.
  • Manage holidays within the engineering and machine minder teams.
  • Operate with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in out-of-hours on-call support.

Key Information about the Role:

  • Position in Organization: Management Level
  • Reports To: Site Chief Engineer
  • Collaborates With: Health & Safety Manager, Technical Manager, Engineering Team, Technical Team, Distribution & Logistics Team, HR Team, Finance Team, OEMs, External Contractors and Suppliers, Central Projects Engineering Team
  • Stand-In: Capable of standing in for the Chief Engineer
  • Flexibility: Flexible hours to suit team and business needs, including out-of-hours contact, emergency call-outs, and weekend duty attendance.

Purpose:

Provide effective leadership and management of the Engineering and Machine Minder Team to achieve site compliance with company policies, procedures, standards, and specifications.
