Nuclear Safety Consultant

💷 Salary: £50,000 - £65,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
📍 Location: Bristol with hybrid working
🔐 Clearance: UK National - SC clearance required (or eligible)

The Opportunity

I'm working closely with a specialist engineering consultancy supporting some of the UK's most complex and high-profile maritime and defence programmes. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Nuclear Safety Consultant to strengthen their capability across nuclear-powered vessels and maritime nuclear installations.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with existing nuclear safety experience-or an engineer from a high-hazard environment-who is keen to deepen their expertise in nuclear technology, safety case delivery, and regulatory compliance within the maritime sector.

You'll be joining a small, highly capable consultancy where individuals have real autonomy, visibility, and influence. The role offers exposure to a wide range of clients and projects, with the chance to shape both technical delivery and future safety standards across the industry.

The Role

The Nuclear Safety Consultant will support the development and implementation of nuclear safety strategies, provide expert technical guidance, and ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards across the full project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver nuclear safety case activities and safety management support across design, build, and commissioning phases

  • Review and evaluate design proposals, specifications, and technical documentation with a strong focus on nuclear safety compliance

  • Prepare and author safety case reports, technical documents, manuals, and operational procedures

  • Develop clear findings and recommendations and present them to clients

  • Participate in client meetings, workshops, and technical presentations

  • Stay up to date with developments in nuclear safety management within the maritime and naval sectors

  • Lead and manage projects, ensuring timely delivery of safety documentation and effective safety strategies

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Background as a Nuclear Safety Consultant or technical experience within the nuclear industry

  • Engineers from comparable high-hazard industries will be considered with the right aptitude and motivation

  • UK National, able to meet Security Check (SC) clearance requirements

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences

Desirable

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline

  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards it

  • Knowledge of vessel design, construction, or operation

  • Understanding of relevant nuclear and maritime regulations and standards

  • Willingness to travel to client sites as required

What's on Offer

  • Competitive salary of £50,000 - £65,000

  • 25 days' holiday, increasing to 30 days with long-term service

  • Generous pension scheme with employer contributions up to 10%

  • Hybrid working model

  • Private healthcare

  • Company and individual performance-related bonus schemes

  • Ongoing support for professional development and chartership
