Job title: Principal Engineer - Technical Support and Authoritative Advice
Location: Filton, Bristol. (Hybrid - 3 days on-site)
What you'll be doing:
- Provide specialist knowledge in responding to engineering queries raised by the MOD customer or Submarine Enterprise partners relating to the design, safety maintenance and operation of the equipment and systems installed in, In-Service Submarine platforms.
- Provide Authoritative Advice, in accordance with the extant governance processes, for Astute-Class equipment in response to engineering queries raised by the MOD Design Authority.
- Provide extant design information in the form of technical publications and drawings from sources where MOD or Enterprise Partners do not have access.
- Liaise with MOD to raise Task Approval Forms (TAFs) for tasking not covered under core contracts.
- Provide support to the MOD customer for the management of Operational Defects (OPDEFs) raised by Submarine platforms.
- Provide support to the MOD customer during Astute Class submarine Incidents, liaising with the Barrow shipyard, furnishing specialist advice as required.
- Provide support across the In-Service Engineering functional areas, including Safety, Design Change, Training and Learning from Experience (LfE).
- Provide support to the appropriate Engineering and Support Managers in the preparation of briefs and reports for both internal and external reporting requirements.
- You'll also have people manager responsibilities in this role.
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Have IEng/EngTech accreditation, or be able to satisfy requirements for these awards, of a relevant engineering institution
- Have experience in a customer-facing role, be an experienced and skilled communicator and have good technical report writing skills
- Knowledge of Royal Navy submarine operating profiles, MoD Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), Submarine Delivery Agency processes, Product Safety, SHE and Environmental policies.
Desirable:
- Engineering qualification (BEng / MEng or equivalent) and/or suitable background in Maritime (Submarine) engineering environment within the following domains:
- Platform Mechanical/Electrical
- Combat Systems
- Have prior knowledge of MOD, organisation, structure and working practices

The team:
The team supports both the Submarine Platform via the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) In-Service Submarines (ISM) and the Combat Systems via Combat Systems Delivery Team (CSDT). You will utilise your experience and training to provide specialist knowledge responding to engineering queries raised by the MOD customer or Submarine Enterprise partners relating to the design, safety, maintenance and operation of the equipment and systems installed in, In-Service submarine platforms. You will also provide support to the ongoing Learning from Experience and Continuous Improvement initiatives for these platforms.
