Brief
Structural Engineer needed for a leading engineering organisation with offices in the Glasgow area who are looking to employ a number of experienced and well-rounded Structural Engineers that takes pride in their work.
You will be undertaking a defined range of engineering activities, such as carrying out technical analyses and investigations involving the design and calculation of ship scantlings or equipment seating's using FEA techniques. You will be supporting Junior Engineers and making engineering decisions within your own sphere of responsibility and working with industry leading cutting-edge technology.
What the role of the Structural Engineer entails:
Some of the main duties of the Systems Engineer will include:
- Performing linear-elastic FEA of steel/aluminium structures as assigned
- Using local sub-modelling techniques identify local stress issues and provide suitable design solutions
- Undertaking FEA of significant ship sections and applying multiple load cases in accordance with project guidelines
- Performing modal analyses of steel/aluminium structures
- Producing structural design solutions, supported by calculations, for either ship scantling issues, global and local ship structure
- Preparing Design Sketches of structural solutions as required
What experience you need to be the successful Structural Engineer:
Essential skills:
- Degree qualified in Naval Architecture or similar engineering related discipline
- Able to perform analysis using recognised FEA tools, preferably Hypermesh and Abaqus
- Sound capability in general structural theory and analysis and its application to ship structures
- Proven experience in an engineering or defence or related industry
Desirable skills:
- Knowledge and competence in ship structural design including the derivation of scantlings and major equipment seatings from first principles
- Sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design
- Knowledge of the use of Classification Society rules and processes, preferably Lloyd's Register Naval Ship Rules
- Awareness of shipyard production and fabrication processes and issues with respect to structural design and analysis
- Willing to / Working towards the requirements for registration as Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council
