Brief

The post is a key part of the Engineering team, acting as the second engineering lead across the Transition into Service Teams. The post will report directly to the Deputy Chief Engineer with day to day and secondary duties reporting to the TIS Support, Training and Infra Delivery Managers as required. The employee will be responsible for providing engineering inputs/expertise across the teams supporting their required deliverables. Assisting with the engineering assurance of the supportability analysis stream of work being provided by the WBSI.

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Design Engineer will include:

  1. Lead on your delegated engineering inputs into the ongoing TIS work streams.
  2. Development and provision of supporting documentation for equipment and systems to the RN Customer including user manuals, datum packs and complex support and training documentation.
  3. Manage and support the development of the engineering aspects of current and future Transition into Service SRDS'.
  4. Take the Engineering lead and support TIS in the procurement of training devices for the Dreadnought Programme. The devices will range from simple demonstration pumps to complex simulators with detailed safety requirements.
  5. Employ the engineering GEAR process to assist in the procurement of the training devices, to ensure the equipment delivered is fit for purpose through the implementation of the appropriate MoD engineering assurance techniques.
  6. Responsible for the design review of the specific TIS deliverables during the procurement and in service phases of the DN programme.
  7. Management of the safety & environmental aspects of the Dreadnought crew training; including strategy, hazard log, body of evidence and assurance reports.
  8. Be the POC for engineering issues that can't be resolved within the TIS team, seeking resolutions to problems or escalating to the relevant chief engineer.
  9. Management of training and infra engineering risks/assumptions/dependencies.
  10. Involvement in the management of supportability/infra/training engineering risks/assumptions/dependencies.

What experience you need to be the successful Design Engineer:

  1. Experience of equipment support arrangements and techniques
  2. Experience in engineering projects, preferably in the defence/maritime sectors.
  3. Identifying engineering risk & opportunities in complex projects
  4. Stakeholder management across engineering/non-engineer teams.
  5. Involvement in engineering planning, management, change reviews and maturity assessments.
  6. Desirable to have experience in support/maintenance engineering.
  7. Awareness of engineering safety related activities.
  8. The ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  9. The skills to apply Systems Thinking in a small to medium delivery area and the application of quality management and assurance in defence suppliers.
  10. The skills to contribute to the application of the 'Guide for Engineering Activities & Review' (GEAR).
  11. Planning skills
  12. The skills to understand and influence the design of a system, component, or process to meet customer requirements within realistic constraints.
