Brief

Head of Software needed for a leading defence oraganisation based in Buckinghamshire who are looking to employ an experience and well-rounded Head of Software that takes pride in their work and who has in-depth experience of leadership and managing complex engineering delivery and support services.

The successful Head of Software candidate would desirably have a relevant degree related to Science or Engineering. If you are technically competent in using JAVA, C++, Python, Azure DevOps/Jira or GIT we would love to hear from you!

What the role entails:

Some of the main duties of the Head of Software will include:

• To provide functional management of all the engineers in this grouping, including regular 1-2-1s, development of career and training plans, conducting annual appraisals and managing staff performance.
• Recruitment and management of the forward load for these teams, inputting into the appropriate business processes and allocating, training or recruiting engineering resource to ensure all project and bid activities are appropriately staffed with SQEP personnel and that the utilization for the team meets the Sonar budget target.
• The Head of Software is expected to take an active role in the delivery of projects to keep them on track.
• To provide inputs into Bids and Proposals, including planning the technical programme of work in conjunction with project management, providing input to technical proposals, software engineering estimates and work package descriptions.
• To support the business in achieving export permissions for our products and projects, particularly in regard to security architectures and emerging Cyber-security standards

What experience you need to be the successful Head of Software

• Leadership experience, this is a key leadership role within a thriving business and the job-holder must be able to influence and lead various stakeholders and teams
• Have technical knowledge and experience of good Software engineering practices is essential, including lifecycle management and knowledge of alternative practices such as Agile also be technically competent in the tools, languages and technologies used by the team (Java, C++, Python, Rhapsody, Azure DevOps/Jira, GIT etc.
• Be qualified to at least degree level in a numerate subject within science and engineering (or have equivalent experience)
• Be able to evidence practical experience of managing complex engineering delivery and support services.
