UK Security Clearance Eligibility is required for this position.

We are working with a major client in the international Aerospace and Aviation sector that is ready to hire a new recruit to provide Technical Leadership of the Safety Management System and a Team of circa 20 experienced staff.

This role will be perfect for someone with a deep but broad area of Safety Management expertise who enjoys working in a passionate team with a strong drive to improve in an ever-evolving business.

The perfect background would be from Defence (Air) but we are open to considering other backgrounds as well if you can show exceptional Safety Management experience

The role will involve developing core technical skills within the team and also mentoring members of the team.

The location of this role is flexible and we can consider locations including:

Bristol, Yeovil, Frimley, Gosport or Basingstoke

The role:

We are looking for someone with drive and enthusiasm to take on this Technical Safety leadership role and lead Safety Management System planning, implementation and operation across the business for a variety of aviation and non-aviation products and services. These include maintenance, design, engineering support, software and training solutions.

You will work closely with the SMS core team leads and the SMS teams deployed into programmes to ensure technical outputs are maintained at a high standard. Your role will provide oversight of products such as safety investigations, complex risk analysis papers, risk assessments, bowties, software heatmaps and trending including training designs on those core skills and Just Culture.

You will support the Senior Manager in representing the SMS team at senior leadership level within the company and also at senior levels across the wider international group.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading the Safety Management System planning and operation
  • Oversee the continued development of the Safety Assurance Strategy and Safety metrics/Intelligence Dashboard Development of the continuous improvement plan.
  • Act as the Technical Lead Engineer for Safety Management Systems.
  • Provide review and oversight of risk analysis papers
  • Provide oversight of safety investigations
  • Act as the SMS focal point for risk escalation, stakeholder review and briefing key leaders
  • Support the Safety Manager in planning and facilitation of the Safety Review Board including:
  • Development of Safety Review Board presentation material and presentation to the Leadership team

Competencies:

Previous experience in a Safety Management leadership role within a commercial or defence organisation

  • Domain Experience in working in an engineering, maintenance or air environment
  • Significant previous experience in briefing senior leadership teams on safety
  • Experience in leading and facilitating effective Safety Action Groups and Safety Review Boards
  • Formal Safety Management System training
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of civil and/or defence safety and SMS regulations, standards and legislation
  • Safety Risk management training and experience presenting safety risk information at a senior level
  • Significant risk management experience in assessing and analyzing risks
  • The candidate should possess excellent written and oral communication skills with a proven record in interacting successfully across multi-discipline teams
  • The role will have significant UK MoD customer, supplier and wider internal interfaces and, therefore, a person who is diplomatic whilst being strong minded is essential
  • Experience using or implementing BowTie Enterprise or Centrik
  • Experience as an advanced user in safety reporting and risk management tools

  • Courage and integrity to maintain safety principles in the face of appropriate challenge
  • Able to build respect and trust from peers and senior management
  • Excellent presentation and verbal briefing skills, able to talk with authority in a clear and concise manner to senior leadership with the right level of detail
  • Ability to drive improvements and strategies forward
  • Good analytical skills
